Lane splitting, or riding a motorcycle or bike between lanes in an attempt to speed up traffic and get to your destination quicker. The only place where it is legal is California, although Utah has introduced some lane filtering laws in may of 2019. It not only helps the bikers by reducing the chance of a rear end collision, but it also speeds up traffic for every driver on the road. People tend to have this mind set that motorcycles are skipping traffic, and they get mad about it and cause the only danger of lane splitting, the angry driver that hates the bike because he is stuck in traffic and wants to take his insecurities out on other people. This is not only legal, but normally practiced in many other parts of the world and I believe it should be legal in every state.
Not only does it reduce the chances of a rear end collision like I said before, the chances of injuries on almost every part of the body decreases when lane splitting safely, so at a reasonable speed. On top of that, it benefits other drivers by reducing wait time by not making other cars wait for them. In fact, a recent study shows that if 10% of people switched to lane splitting with a motorcycle, it would reduce commutes by 8 minutes on average.
But most importantly, weaving through traffic, and by extension lane splitting is really fun. Just like the autobahn, I think this needs to be more regular in America because our roads and traffic laws are far from modernized.
